A Case of Vibrio alginolyticus Myringitis

Abstract
vibrio alginolyticus is a halophilic specie in the lysine decarboxylase-positive and arginine dihydrolase-negative group of Vibrios. V. alginolyticus is usually isolated in spring and summer from marine sources. It occasionally causes
extraintestinal
infections in humans exposed to such environment. We recently isolated V. alginolyticus from a patient with acute myringitis. A 19-year-old girl developed purulent yellowish otorrhea in the right ear, after exposure to sea water. Pure culture of
V.
alginolyticus was isolated. The isolates showed typical cultural and biochemical characteristics of V. alginolyticus The organism was resistant to ampicillin and carbenicillin but susceptible to other antimicrobial agents tested. V. alginolyticus
should
be considered in tissue infection of patients with a history of exposure to sea water(Korean J Clin Pathol 1995;15(1):101~5)
